Moving With Kids — How to Make Moving Day Easier on Them

Practical ways to prepare kids of different ages for a move, from packing their room to what to do on moving day itself.

Moving is disruptive for kids in a way it isn’t for adults — their routine, their room, and often their school and friends are all changing at once. A little planning goes a long way.

Tell them early, in age-appropriate terms

Younger kids generally do better with a shorter runway (too much advance notice can create anxiety without context), while older kids and teens usually want as much notice as possible, especially if the move affects their school or friend group. Be honest about what’s changing and what’s staying the same.

Let them pack their own space

Giving kids some control over packing their own room — even if it’s just choosing which box their toys go in — helps the move feel less like something happening to them. Set aside a clearly marked “first day” box with a few favorite toys, a comfort item, and anything they’ll want immediately in the new place, so it doesn’t get buried in a stack of boxes.

Keep routines during the chaos

Where possible, keep regular mealtimes, bedtimes, and routines steady in the weeks around the move — consistency in the schedule offsets some of the disruption happening everywhere else.

Moving day itself

Moving day is loud, busy, and full of strangers carrying furniture — often overwhelming for younger kids. If you can arrange for young children to be somewhere else (a relative’s house, a friend, childcare) during the actual loading and unloading, it tends to go more smoothly for everyone. For older kids, giving them a specific job — unpacking their own room, watching a younger sibling — can help them feel involved rather than in the way.

After the move

Unpack kids’ rooms early, even before the rest of the house — having their own space set up first gives them a sense of stability while the rest of the home is still in boxes.
