How to Prepare for Movers: A Room-by-Room Guide

Since most local moves are billed by the hour, the biggest lever you have over the final cost is how ready your home is when the crew arrives. Here’s what to do, room by room.

Bedrooms

Empty dresser drawers of anything fragile or valuable (movers can typically move dressers with clothes still inside, but not jewelry or electronics). Strip and bag bedding. Clear a path from the bedroom to the front door.

Kitchen

This is usually the most time-consuming room to pack — lots of small, breakable items. Have boxes ready and, if you’re packing it yourself, get it done a day or two before move day rather than the morning of.

Living areas

Disconnect and coil cords for TVs and electronics, and keep remotes and cables together in a labeled bag. Note any furniture that needs disassembly (bed frames, large shelving) so your crew knows what to expect.

Garage

Garages tend to be the most disorganized room in the house by move day. Do a quick sort beforehand — what’s moving, what’s being donated, what’s junk — so the crew isn’t guessing. If a lot of it is staying behind, consider a garage cleanout either before or after your move.

General tips

• Keep a clear, obstacle-free path from each room to the truck
• Reserve elevators or loading docks in advance if you live in a building that requires it
• Set aside anything you’re taking in your own car (valuables, medications, important documents)
• Have cash or a card ready for tips, if you plan to tip your crew
