The Complete Local Moving Checklist

Local moves feel simple until the week they happen. This checklist breaks the process into manageable chunks so nothing gets missed.

2-3 weeks before

• Book your moving crew and confirm your date
• Start using up food in the fridge and freezer instead of moving it
• Order boxes and packing supplies, or confirm your movers are supplying them
• Notify your landlord or HOA of your move-out date if required

1 week before

• Pack everything except daily essentials — start with items you use least (off-season clothes, decor, books)
• Label boxes by room, not just contents, so they land in the right place
• Set aside a “first night” box with toiletries, chargers, and basic kitchen items
• Confirm parking/loading logistics at both addresses, especially for apartment buildings with reserved elevator windows

2-3 days before

• Finish packing everything except what you’ll use the morning of the move
• Disassemble any furniture you’re taking apart yourself, or flag it for your crew
• Confirm your move time window with your movers
• Charge phones and portable chargers — you’ll want them

Move day

• Walk the crew through the home so they know what’s going and what’s staying
• Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, and cabinet before the truck leaves
• Take photos of both properties if you’re a renter, for your move-out records
• Keep essential documents (lease, ID, medications) with you, not in the truck

After the move

• Check furniture and boxes against your inventory
• Update your address with your bank, DMV, and any subscriptions
• Break down boxes for recycling, or ask if your movers can take them
