Not everything you’re clearing out has to end up hauled to the landfill. Here’s a general guide to where things can go instead — always worth a quick check of current hours and accepted items before you make a trip, since policies change.

Usable furniture and household goods

Organizations like Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and Habitat for Humanity ReStore accept gently used furniture, housewares, and clothing at donation centers around the county, and some offer pickup for larger items. Local shelters and community organizations often accept specific items like blankets, kitchenware, or children’s items directly — a quick search for organizations near your neighborhood is worth the time before you haul something away.

Electronics

Electronics (TVs, computers, printers) generally shouldn’t go in regular trash or standard junk removal loads due to e-waste regulations. California retailers and some big-box electronics stores accept small electronics for recycling, and San Diego County operates household hazardous waste and e-waste collection events and facilities for larger items.

Mattresses

California has a statewide mattress recycling program (Bye Bye Mattress) with participating drop-off locations, and many mattress retailers will haul away an old mattress when delivering a new one.

Household hazardous waste

Paint, chemicals, pesticides, motor oil, and similar items typically need to go to a household hazardous waste facility rather than standard trash or junk removal — the City and County of San Diego operate collection facilities and periodic collection events for exactly this purpose.

Books, media, and school supplies

Local libraries, schools, and secondhand bookstores often accept book and media donations, and some youth organizations accept school supplies and backpacks in good condition.
