What Can Junk Removal Companies NOT Take?

Most junk removal companies, including Cold Cuts, can take the vast majority of what accumulates in a home — furniture, appliances, yard waste, general clutter. But a handful of categories require special handling due to local and state disposal regulations, and it’s worth knowing about them before you book a pickup.

Typically not accepted by general junk removal

• Hazardous chemicals — paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, and similar items usually need to go to a household hazardous waste facility rather than general junk removal.
• Asbestos-containing materials — found in some older insulation, flooring, or roofing, this requires a licensed abatement contractor, not a general hauling service.
• Medical waste and sharps — these have their own disposal requirements and aren’t accepted by general junk removal.
• Certain electronics — many “e-waste” items (old TVs, computers) are accepted by junk removal but routed to specific e-waste recycling facilities rather than general disposal, due to state electronics recycling rules.
• Ammunition and firearms — not handled by junk removal services under any circumstances.
• Tires — often require a separate disposal fee or a specific recycling facility due to state tire recycling regulations.

What to do if you’re not sure

If you’re not sure whether something falls into a special category, ask when you book — it’s much easier to sort this out ahead of time than to have an item turned away on pickup day. For hazardous materials specifically, most counties (including San Diego County) operate household hazardous waste drop-off facilities for residents.
