Apartment moves involve a layer of logistics that house moves don’t — building rules, shared spaces, and other residents to work around. Here’s what tends to matter most in San Diego specifically.

Check your building’s move-in/move-out policy

Many larger apartment and condo buildings require advance notice for moves, and some restrict moves to certain days or hours (often weekdays, to reduce wear on shared elevators and lobbies). Ask your leasing office or HOA about:

• Required advance notice for scheduling a move
• Certificate of insurance requirements for your moving company
• Freight elevator reservations, if the building has one
• Loading dock or designated parking for moving trucks
• Any deposit required to cover potential damage to common areas

Confirm these details before you book your crew — a move that gets turned away at the door because of a missed building requirement is one of the most avoidable delays.

Parking and truck access

Older buildings, especially in denser neighborhoods like North Park, Hillcrest, and coastal towns like Pacific Beach and Mission Beach, often have limited street parking and narrow driveways. If your building doesn’t have a loading zone, look into whether your city requires a temporary “no parking” permit for moving trucks — this is worth checking a few days ahead, since some permits take time to process.

Elevators and stairs

If you’re above the ground floor, confirm elevator access with your building and let your moving crew know in advance — it changes both the time estimate and, in some buildings, whether you need a scheduled elevator reservation window. Walk-up buildings without elevators typically take longer and may need an additional crew member for larger items.
