How to Move a Hot Tub Safely

Hot tubs are one of the heaviest, most awkward items in a typical backyard — often several hundred pounds empty, with motors and plumbing that make them fragile in ways furniture isn’t. Here’s what actually goes into moving or removing one safely.

Step 1: Drain it completely

A hot tub must be fully drained before it can be moved or removed — even a partially full tub is far too heavy and risks damaging the shell or motor during transport. Most tubs have a drain valve near the base; check your owner’s manual if you’re not sure where it is.

Step 2: Disconnect power

Hot tubs are hardwired or plugged into a dedicated circuit. Power should be shut off (and disconnected by an electrician if hardwired) before anyone attempts to move the unit.

Step 3: Assess access

This is where most DIY hot tub moves go wrong. Measure gates, side yard paths, and doorways against the tub’s dimensions. Many backyard hot tubs were installed before a fence or structure was built around them and physically can’t come back out the way they went in without being taken apart.

Step 4: Decide — move or remove?

• Moving to a new location on the same property or a new home: requires specialized equipment (dollies, ramps, sometimes a crane for tricky access) and enough people to safely handle several hundred pounds without tipping or dropping it.
• Removing it for good: in most cases, it’s more practical to cut the shell down into sections for removal, especially with tight side-yard access. This is faster, safer, and avoids the risk of damaging the tub or your property trying to move it intact.
